Modern Art

30. November 2022 at 3:00 PM CEST

Look forward to over 200 lots from the fields of photography, object art, painting and graphic art. An absolute highlight of our offer is the watercolor 'Mädchen mit Pelz-Boa' by Otto Dix. The pale, delicate body of the depicted is wrapped in a tight transparent dress, which is contrasted by the dark puffy fur boa and fur cap. At that time, Dix was devoted to the motifs of metropolitan types, marginalized groups of society and figures from nightlife. The drawing, created around 1925 and accompanied by an expertise by Florian Karsch, shows a fashionable young lady in elegant clothes typical of the Golden Twenties, reflecting the contemporary idea of attractiveness. The estimated price of the portrait in the 'Neue Sachlichkeit' (New Objectivity) style is EUR 20.000 - 26.000.

Gunter Sachs, on the other hand, is dedicated to the contemporary ideal of beauty in his works 'Hommage à Warhol'. The two photographs, each estimated at EUR 9.000 - 11.000, show Claudia Schiffer as Brigitte Bardot. Sachs thus created a tribute to his friend Andy Warhol.

Right at the beginning of the auction you can expect an offer of more than eighty prints of exceptional provenance: The collection from the estate of the Ticinese Nesto Jacometti contains prints, almost all of which emerged from the mid-1950s to 1971 from the publishing house 'Œuvre Gravée' founded by Jacometti. The prints, which were often executed outside of ordinary editions, reflect the publisher's friendly relationship with his artist friends and testify to great artistic quality.

We are also pleased to offer you a large number of exciting Olympic posters from the graphic design office of Otl Aicher and his team that were designed for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The posters in A0 and A1 formats are for the most part test prints showing the various sports disciplines in later differently chosen color variations and in some cases motifs, making them a rarity in this collecting field.

Among the contemporaries, Eberhard Havekost stands out with a diptych (estimate EUR 5.500 - 7.500), which was given its format - pragmatically motivated - for reasons of space for transport, as well as a Knickfaltung by Herbert Zangs, which is estimated at EUR 5.000 - 8.000. Philipp Messner, whose installation 'Constantly Shifting' (2016/2017) was recently on view at the Pinakothek der Moderne, is represented in our upcoming auction with a metal-chrome pallet object from 2020, which we value at EUR 5.000 - 7.000.

We look forward to your active participation in our auction on November 30, 2022.

Our winter auction of Modern and Contemporary Art achieved very pleasing results and a good sales quota

The absolute highlight was the watercolor 'Mädchen mit Pelz-Boa' by Otto Dix, which was sold for EUR 30.000 and attracted several bidders. Erich Heckel's watercolor work 'Am Strand' also changed hands for EUR 16.000.

The oil painting 'Garden of Eden' by Ota Janeček fetched more than four times the lower estimate and was knocked down for EUR 8.000 after an exciting bidding battle. A similarly lively participation was recorded for the ceramic 'Nérée' by the French artist Jean Cocteau, the painted plate brought EUR 2.800.

The collection of prints from the estate of Nesto Jacometti, offered with over 80 lots, had a sales quota of over 75%. The lithographs and proofs by Zao Wou-Ki stood out considerably; 'Embrasement spatial' from 1955 exceeded the upper estimate and sold for EUR 4,600. Jean Lurçat's works also enjoyed great popularity.

Piero Dorazio's work 'Piccolo Bleu' was knocked down for EUR 5,500, marking the highest price increase in the Contemporary Art chapter.

Unsold objects are available for purchase in the post auction sale until December 30, 2022. We thank you for your active participation in the auction and are already looking forward to the next auction date on June 29, 2023.
