With around 670 selected items from the history of 20th- and 21st-century design, Quittenbaum Art Auctions invites you to this year’s fall auction on October 13.

The auction kicks off with the colorful designs of Italian designer Gaetano Pesce. A particularly striking example of his experimental approach to materials and form is his 'Shadow' design (Cat. No. 10). Designed in 2007, this armchair turns the user into a co-creator of the object: The polyurethane foam expands freely within the coated fabric cover and only takes on its individual shape upon contact with the body. The bright green armchair is estimated at €3,000 to €5,000.

With 15 designs, Munich-based lighting designer Ingo Maurer is prominently represented in German postwar design. Two lamps from the 'Uchiwa' series are in particularly fine condition: a large 'Ju-Yon' ceiling lamp (Cat. No. 209) with 14 rice-paper panels and a 'Hana I' (Cat. No. 210) are each estimated at €6,000. The auction also features two round 'Schlitz Up' light objects (Cat. Nos. 215–216). Designed by Ingo Maurer in 2002, these lamps have been on display at a well-known Munich daytime bar since 2003 and will now go under the hammer with an estimated price of €5,000 to €7,000.

One of the standout highlights of Italian design is the 'Mikado' table/floor lamp, which Luigi Caccia Dominioni designed for Azucena in 1962 (Cat. No. 351). The lamp stands on a solid granite base from which a slender metal tube rises. The top is crowned by a swiveling, lacquered metal shade combined with a satin-finished glass sphere, allowing the direction and mood of the light to be individually adjusted. The lamp is estimated at €5,000 to €6,000. The '865' sofa (Cat. No. 303) by Ico Parisi (designed in 1958)—for which the name 'Mikado' would admittedly have been a rather fitting choice as well!—also conveys a sense of comfort with an interesting twist. Its lightweight metal frame, painted black and finished with white trim, creates an intriguing contrast to the voluminous seating elements. The piece, manufactured by Figli di Amedo Cassina, is listed at €8,000.

When discussing Scandinavian design, Verner Panton must not go unmentioned. To mark the 100th birthday of the Danish designer and architect (1926–1998)—who is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum—Quittenbaum Art Auctions is delighted to offer a selection of his works. A true showstopper is the modular 'Cloverleaf Sofa' (Cat. No. 331), which Verner Panton designed in 1970 for Visiona II. The piece offered here consists of five sections and was recently reupholstered with a red fabric by Kvadrat. The five modules can be arranged in various ways, creating different seating configurations. Estimated at €12,000 to €15,000, this seating piece was originally located in the atrium of the National Museum in Copenhagen. In addition, the auction features iconic lighting designs (two 'Fun 1 DM' ceiling lights, a 'Panthella' table lamp, and a three-part 'Flower Pot' ceiling light), brightly colored seating pieces (a 'Heart One Chair,' a lounger, and a stool from the 'Welle' series), as well as textiles that exude the charm of the 1970s.

For the 1995 Triennale di Milano, Ron Arad designed the multi-part installation '38 Tables,' in which 38 tables of various sizes and shapes were arranged in a giant spiral. Catalog number 624 corresponds to number 9 from the first edition exhibited in Milan. This impressive table, made of polished stainless steel, is offered with an estimated price of €12,000 to €20,000.
