Biography
Heinz te Laake created a versatile œuvre consisting of paintings, kinetic objects and sculptures.
After studying at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Berlin under Ernst Schumacher and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, he worked as a freelance artist. In the late 1950s, he created his first kinetic paintings and sculptures, in which he included clockworks. His kinetic compositions consist of geometric shapes and lines. From the works, called 'clock images' by the artist, time can be read. In painting, on canvas, te Laake devoted himself, among other things, to the female nude and created expressive, gestural paintings in bright colors. He also worked repeatedly on subjects of applied art. Thus, in addition to watches for the wrist, he also designed everything from collector's porcelains and table decorations to artistic bottle labels for wineries in the Rheingau. Te Laake's 'clock images' can be found in numerous museum collections, e.g. the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam or the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen.
