Mineral hollow casting. H. 69.8 x 24.5 x 22.7 cm, weight 9.90 kg. Signed on the reverse at the top of the base under the left leg: LEHM...[BRUCK] (partially illegible).
Provenance: Estate of Prof. Konrad Leverkusen/Burscheid; acquired by the aforementioned around 2005, since then in a private collection in Northern Germany.
The human figure is central to Wilhelm Lehmbruck's work, for which he developed a distinctive visual language situated between naturalistic observation and expressionistic formal exploration. In the 'Small Female Torso', created around 1911/12, the fragmentation of the body itself becomes an artistic means of expression – a concept that draws on both ancient sculptures and the modern sculpture of Auguste Rodin. The currently used name 'Hagen Torso' refers to Karl Ernst Osthaus, the founder of the Folkwang Museum in Hagen, who acquired a cast stone version for his collection in 1912.
