For her first major fashion assignment for Vogue, Annie Leibovitz was sent to Paris by Anna Wintour during the couture shows.

Working alongside fashion editor Grace Coddington, Leibovitz created a photographic essay featuring Kate Moss and Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs—an encounter that would become the celebrated Puffy Takes Paris editorial.

Part fashion story, part cultural document, the series captured the electricity of Paris couture at the close of the 1990s. Among the images from Puffy Takes Paris is this striking black-and-white portrait of Kate Moss. Leibovitz captures her in Christian Dior Haute Couture shoulder-grazing diamond earrings, setting the extraordinary brilliance of the jewels against the softness of Moss’s skin.

The result is less a conventional fashion portrait than an exercise in light, texture and contrast—where couture becomes sculpture and the model becomes icon.

The photograph was later included in The Kate Moss Portfolio, published by Danziger Projects, New York, as part of an edition of 30.
