Among the founding members of the Milanese group 'Memphis' were Ettore Sottsass, Michele de Lucchi, Marco Zanini, and Matteo Thun. Their approach was anti-design combined with a healthy dose of business acumen. Typical stylistic elements included brightly laminated surfaces, imaginative designs, a carefree approach to functionality, and a relaxed playfulness that deliberately broke with conventional design language. International acclaim came quickly. Collectors of Memphis furniture included Karl Lagerfeld and David Bowie. In the postmodern era, no one could have strayed further from Dieter Rams' "less is more" philosophy than Memphis. Perhaps that's why the works of this group are so enjoyable as an antithesis. Objects from the Memphis universe in this collection include, for example, Shiro Kuramata's "Ritz" desk, which is still in its original Memphis shipping crate. Until the photographs taken at the auction house for this catalog, it had never left its box. The only German designer who belonged to this group was Thomas Bley, who is represented in the collection with his table light “Astor”.
