Kazuko Miyamoto (1942 Tokyo - lives and works in NYC)
'Archway to cellar (Installation at P.S.1, New York, 1978)', 1978

Silver gelatin print. 19.5 x 23.5 cm (print), 32.5 x 37 cm (framed). Titled on the reverse: "Archway to the cellar" Installation at PSI. nyc 1978 and signed: Kazuko Miyamoto (black fineliner). Framed under glass in a passe-partout and described as such.

Provenance: Acquired in 2009 at Galerie Exile, Berlin; since then in a private collection.

Miyamoto's String Constructions emerged from the 1970s onward as an independent contribution to New York Minimal Art. The artist conceived of these expansive installations, constructed from taut threads, as a kind of refuge and sanctuary for her own body, thus combining the formal rigor of Minimalism with a decidedly personal, female perspective.
