One is often asked, "What's your favorite piece?" As a collector, it's hard to answer that; usually, it's the most recent addition to the collection. But there are some objects that consistently bring joy—and these often come from the studio of Achille Castiglioni. In 1944, after studying architecture, he joined the design studio founded in 1938 by his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo. At the time, they were among the most important designers of the Italian post-war period. Achille Castiglioni continually delighted us with his imaginative designs and a playful approach to found objects, things more commonly associated with building materials or entirely different product contexts, like a bicycle saddle or tractor seat. Castiglioni transformed the everyday into poetry. He was a master of technology and elegance, often with a twinkle in his eye. Anyone who encounters the "RR126", an elegant stereo radio receiver with a record player (1966), is greeted by a smiling face. "Allunaggio" (Moon Landing) was designed as an outdoor stool by the Castiglioni brothers in 1965 and has lost none of its modern appeal. He is a designer we would have loved to meet in person.
