Biography
"Gold can bridge, connect, or even more so, demarcate, emphasise the contrasts, or even merge everything into a unity."
Born in Germany, he first received training as a steel engraver before he was drawn to the State Kunst- und Gewerbe School in Pforzheim. He studied under Prof. Klauss Ullrich from 1960 to 1964, while completing an apprenticeship as a goldsmith with Margot Mämeke in Heidelberg at the same time. After a two-year stay in Barcelona, he finally settled with his workshop in his adopted city Milan in 1966.
Reister's works live from vivid surface structures. The works from the late 1960s and early 1970s shown here seem to have grown organically, the granulated sections look like they have been placed almost by chance. However, they are the result of well-considered compositions, being, in fact, portable small sculptures. Even though Reister shows a multifaceted interest in 'base' materials such as stainless steel, wood or marble, gold and the skilful use of the precious metal always play an important role in his works.
