Biography

Jacques Gautier was a French jewelry artist known for his innovative enamel technique and geometric designs. He combined silver, glass, and enamel in bright, translucent colors, developing a distinctive style. Gautier worked for leading fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, Jacques Fath, Pierre Cardin, and Paco Rabanne. His black-and-white geometric enamel works for Dior in the 1950s in particular earned him widespread recognition and the nickname “Picasso of jewelry.” His jewelry pieces accompanied numerous haute couture shows and were featured in magazines such as Vogue and Elle. Gautier mainly produced unique pieces, with only a few successful models being reproduced. He ran his own galleries in Paris, for example on Rue Jacob and Rue de Bourgogne, where he also organized private exhibitions for collectors and interested parties. In 1999, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris dedicated a retrospective to Gautier, showcasing his work from the 1950s to the 1970s and honoring his unique combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern fashion design.
