Biography

Carl Otto Czeschka showed great talent for drawing and painting at an early age. He received a scholarship to attend high school in Vienna and completed an apprenticeship in his father's carpentry business. From 1894-99 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the Wiener Werkstätte until he was called to teach at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts. His best-known works include the marble reliefs for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, illustrations for the "Nibelungen", a tapestry for the Hamburg State Opera, and, in 1946, the logo for the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT.
