Tokuzō (Hokkai) Takashima (1850 - 1931) was a trained forester, but had also written several treatises on Japanese flora and agriculture. In 1885-88, he was sent to Nancy by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture to further his education at the forestry school there. Takashima, who also worked as a painter and illustrator, became friends with numerous artists from Nancy, including Ernest Bussière, Emile Gallé and Victor Prouvé. He and Emile Gallé shared a particular enthusiasm for botany. Takashima took part in the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Nancy in 1887. He left Nancy in 1889 and from 1899 he devoted himself exclusively to painting in Japan.
