Annie Leibovitz is one of the most famous photographers of our time. The American was born as the daughter of a Jewish officer in the U.S. Air Force and a teacher of modern dance. Leibovitz studied painting and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute in the late 1960s before she began working at Rolling Stone music magazine as a senior photographer in 1971. Leibovitz accompanied the same-named rock band on tour and created intimate portraits of celebrities such as Mick Jagger in a bathrobe or John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which helped her achieve worldwide fame. In 1983, she left the magazine to become chief photographer at Vanity Fair magazine, which she helped to found. The photographer realized numerous photo campaigns for fashion magazines, agencies and fashion brands. In the late 1980s, she met the publicist Susan Sontag, with whom a love affair grew. In 2000, Leibovitz photographed for the first time for the Pirelli calendar. To these days, she is considered as one of the most influential and best-paid photographers in her field. In 2007, she photographed Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, and two years later the Obama family at the White House.
