Lot: 628

Armchair with cover for the 'Holland'schen Stuhl' by Henry van de Velde, 1898

Dimensions of the backrest cover with border: 49.5 x 20-34.7 cm; Seat cover with border: 41.5 x 45.5 cm. Made presumably at Scherrebek. Tapestry, wool and cotton, light green, pink, cream white and light brown. Chair: H. 115.7 cm, 56.5 x 56 cm. Oak wood, decorative copper nails.

The earliest known design by Henry van de Velde for furniture covers, carried out in the art weaving school in Scherrebek, whereby, due to the manufacturing process, there were lighter and darker variants. The name 'Holland'scher Stuhl' seems to have come up from the fact that the tapestry was first exhibited in the 'Art and Crafts' gallery in The Hague. The cover was actually only used on the model of a dining room chair that van de Velde had designed for his own villa in 1894. Very few copies of the tapestries are still preserved today.
