Two '50642' plywood chairs, 1950/51

Erich Menzel. '50642' chair, 1950/51. H. H. 78 x 43 x 55,5 cm. Made by VEB Deutsche Werkstätten, Hellerau. Plywood, 29 layers.

One of the most important designs of East Germany in the post-war years, designed by Bauhaus student and draughtsman Erich Menzel. The first chipless bent plywood chair. "(... ) It was made of 29 layers of resin-drenched plywood, that are being moulded with the aid of a steam-heated forging die that exerts a hydaulic pressure of 60 kg/cm2 and bends 140 grades in 25 minutes (...)" (Vom Sofakissen zum Städtebau, S. 117). The chair has no screws or any other pieces of metal.
