Post auction report
Handsome design from Italy has always been sought after by German Design aficionados and international clients of Quittenbaum. Thus, on 20 September, above all, outstanding designs were battled over and received high bids. The ‚Joe’ easy chair, by Jonathan de Pas, Donato d’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi in the shape of a baseball glove got sold, covered in white vinyl, for € 5,000 and a custom-made version with red-brown suede augmented to € 7,000. Enzo Mari’s ‚Autoprogettazione – Carré I’ table and his ‚Emme’ bed were knocked down at € 4,200 resp. € 2,200 as expected. A purple perspex writing desk by Fabio Lenci attained its estimate at € 4,400, too. An elegant book case in the style of Carlo Pagani from the 1940s attained the highest price. It went into a German collection for € 9,000. A large dining table of mahogany and oak from the 1950s went for € 8,000. The multi-faceted choice of floor-, wall- and table lights aroused interest. A pair of floor lights with Murano shades changed hands for € 6,600. The ‚Gherpe’ table light by Superstudio was purchased by a client in the room, who bid € 2,000; the ‚Aton’ table light, however will travel to America, it attained 50% more than its estimate and was knocked down at € 3,000. Bar cabinets are en vogue as one was able to see in this auction. All these lots on offer got sold, among them a bar by Aldo Tura, covered in brown kid leather, that went for € 1,800. The items by Ettore Sottsass got battled over as well, his ‚Morosina’ vase climbed up to € 2,500.
In the Art choice a photograph of the Casa Devalle by Carlo Mollino shone. It doubled its estimate and went to Italy (hammer: € 3,600). A Polish bidder secured for himself the ‚Talmud Polski II’ painting by Pole Stanislaw Fijalkowski, from 1988 for € 6,800 and Ryszard Winiarski’s ‚Chance in game’ from 1987 for € 3,000.
The Murano offer saw the top lots going very well. The ‚a pennellate’ vase by Carlo Scarpa from 1942 attained the highest knockdown with € 20,000. Scarpa’s ‚Velato’ with its pattern worked with the wheel, was purchased by a German collector for € 19,000. Dino Marten’s rare ‚Eldorado’ vase in the shape of a trombone was sold for € 17,000, his ‚Geltrude’ vase changed hands at € 13,000. A calabash-shaped Pulegoso vase by Napoleone Martinuzzi from 1930 counted among the rarest pieces. It was sold at € 16,000. Fulvio Bianconi’s ‚Pezzato’ vases have been sought after for years and were sold for € 6,000 to € 10,000. Among the contemporary artists, Toots Zynsky attained the highest knockdown for her bowl of fused threads (€ 6,000).
