Post auction report

Quittenbaum has been selling Murano glass for 10 years with continuing success

Within the art market, Murano glass of the 20th Century naturally is a relatively young segment. Quittenbaum held their first special auction in April 2000 displaying a Berlin private collection. Ever since, one or two auctions with this special topic have been hosted every year.

In the auction on 9 February, on the one hand, one could remark a consolidated trend, on the other hand there is still room for surprises in this young market. Decorative works by Ercole Barovier have been en vogue all the time, thus, one of his ‚a spina’ vases surpassed its estimate of € 13,000 with a gross proceeds of € 17,850. A ‚caccia’ vase went for € 6,375 gross proceeds to a German collector. The United States, too, begin to take part again – thus a New York interior decorator stocked up on a dozen large, colourful vases. After having attained quite high hammer prices for Venini vases in the sale of September 2009, some rather high estimates might have inhibited potential buyers – so check out the post-auction sale – you’ll find some real treats!

Consignments for the next special sale of Murano glass on 21 September 2010 are always welcome!

By the way: In autumn 2010 Askan Quittenbaum’s and Bernd Polster’s ‚Murano’ Die Klassiker des Italienischen Glasdesigns’ will be published at DuMont, Cologne.
