Pre auction report

The focus in our Design sale on 21 September, offering over 300 items, lies on premium-quality fitments by wellknown manufacturers.

Thus, furniture factories Knoll International and Herman Miller are being treated in a chapter of their own. Almost 30 pieces of furniture in Quittenbaum’s choice had been created by Ray and Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi and other renowned designers. For example Noguchi’s classic ‚IN-50’ sofa table for Herman Miller (€ 2,800) and Saarinen’s ‚Pedestal’ dining table for Knoll (€ 2,400). Another chapter is dedicated to Scandinavian Design. More high-end furniture here: Finn Juhl’s very rare settee dating from 1945 (€ 8,000) and a handsome ‚Egg’ chair by Arne Jacobsen (€ 3,300). If you have space, don’t miss the 19 piece serpentine sofa by DeSede, dating from 1970. What a bargain at its moderate estimate of € 5,000 to 9,000. It’s still in production today but would cost, at this size, more than € 20,000. Aside from furniture, there is an exquisite range of tapestries and carpets.

Moreover, two ceramicists have gotten into the centre of attention: A collection of works by Bruno Gambone, son of notorious ceramic artist Guido Gambone and another one with sculptured vases by Frenchman Gilbert Portanier. The oeuvre of both artists can be had quite low-priced at the moment. Portanier’s works are estimated all below € 800 while Bruno Gambone’s ceramics can be had between € 500 and 1,200. Architectural Digest acknowledged his work just recently.
