Informations for potential buyers

Quittenbaum has realised auctions offering Art Nouveau, Art Déco, Design, Murano Glass and Tribal Art since 1998.
For each auction, a catalogue is issued with thorough descriptions and colour photographs of the presented items. Catalogues can be purchased individually or as part of different subscriptions.

If you are interested in one special piece, we will be happy to offer advice individually and specifically. If you wish, we can provide an additional condition report and more detailed colour images for free.

If your collection is directed at a certain branch, item or designer, we will be happy to welcome you into our interest service. You will receive information and advice about any item of your interest automatically and for free.

Viewing
All lots are displayed on our premises at Theresienstrasse 58 and 60. Viewing starts generally at least 5 days prior to the auction, opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Participating in the auction/ bidding
Prior to participation, please read our conditions of sale. If you want to take part in the auction personally, you need to register with us and a staff member will provide you with a bidding number (also available during the viewing). If you are not able to attend, you can leave an absentee bid with the maximum price you are willing to pay. Maximum bids (bidding form) will be used insofar as concurring bids require.

Example:  one item has an estimate of 1,000,-- €. Its reserve is 800,-- €. You bid up to 1,500,-- €. A potential buyer in the room holds against you until 1,100,-- €. So, the hammer falls down in your favour at 1,200,-- €.

Telephone bidding is possible from an estimate of 1,000,-- €.

Example:  You are interested in one item and wish to purchase it, but have no possibility to take part in the auction personally. In that case, fill in the bidding form accordingly. During the auction, a staff member of Quittenbaum’s will call you and inform you about the events in the room. Give this person your bid, he or she will forward it to the auctioneer.

Written absentee bids can be conveyed until the evening of the previous day of the auction, via post, fax or E-mail.

Advice:  If you wish to take part in the auction in person or via telephone, set yourself the maximum sum you are willing to invest.

Please be aware that the buyer’s premium is added to the hammer price!

Purchase and payment
There are two kinds of agio:

1. To the hammer price, the buyer’s premium of 19.5% is being raised, on the total amount the separate VAT of 19% is being levied (standard taxation).
2. A buyer’s premium of 27.5%, including the VAT, which cannot be shown separately, is being added (differential taxation).

Advice:   * Commercial buyers residing in the EU preferably take standard taxation, which they can set off
against tax liability.
* Private buyers residing in the EU prefer differential taxation, the rate of tax is lower that way.
* We recommend standard taxation to buyers outside the EU. Items purchased at auction and intended
for export into non-EU countries are not subject to VAT. Bidders wishing to export their purchases
personally to non-EU countries will be refunded their VAT as soon as the auction house is in
receipt of the relevant export and customs’ documents. If your purchase is being sent by the
auction house, VAT will not be required.

Please be aware that, for shipping we must charge transport, packing and insurance as well as 40,-- € for the creation of customs’ papers for invoice amounts above 1,000,-- €.

Items can be paid and picked up during the auction. Otherwise, you will receive an invoice a few days after the sale.

Shipment
If you won an item, you will receive the invoice together with a shipment form.
You can also download that form, fill it in and send it to us. We suggest different kinds of transportation. The form shall clarify our calculation of shipping costs.

Export tax regulations
VAT needs not be imposed in standard taxation when:

1. Export into non-EU countries.
2. Commercial buyers of similar trade residing in the EU with VAT identification numbers.
