Coveted decorative design and exquisit rarities!

Despite the currently noticeable restraint of the Design clients, items of well-known designers and exquisit rarities found new owners in this autumn season’s first design sale. The highlight of the auction, Sandro Chia’s ‚Chair’ of heavy bronze attained considerable € 7,500,--. The first lot, Peter Behrens’s Synchronal electric supply clock surpassed its estimate and went for € 1,200 to a renowned museum in New York. Rare lamps like the ‚Tastlicht’ table light by Marianne Brandt (hammer: € 650,--) and a pair of sconces by Christian Dell (hammer:
€ 800,--) were of special interest for German collectors. The three-legged stools by Charlotte Perriand have been among the classics of French design of the 20th Century for quite some time now. An American collector secured himself an outstandingly beautiful pair of stained ashwood for € 2,000,--, just below their estimate. The single stool, even a rarer piece with its shorter legs and black paint, is going to be sent to the same address for € 1,500,--. An elegant illuminated mirror by Fontana Arte was one item that went into the New York commerce, that for the rest had been rather quiet.

Rare pieces like Pablo Picasso’s decorative ‚Vallauris’ plate (hammer: € 1,200,--) and the ‚Opalino’ table light by Venini (hammer: € 900,--) doubled respectively almost tripled their estimates. There was a lively interest in Italian Design classics. Joe Colombo’s ‚Acrilica’ table light went for €1,600,-- to an English collector, the ‚San Remo’ floor light, shaped like a palm tree, is going to be part of a German collection for € 3,200,--. A very attractive cabinet in the style of Piet Zwart is going to go to Italy for € 2,200,--.

A German collector is happy to having obtained a fine choice of Italian electric appliances: Marco Zanuso’s ‚RR-127’ radio for Brionvega for € 500,-- and his ‚Fonoamplificatore Concetto 101’ record player with two loudspeaker boxes for € 2,500,-- as well as the ‚Phonola 563’ radio by Luigi Caccia Dominioni together with Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, dating from 1939, for € 2,600,--.
