Post auction report

In the Design auction, it was the Italians who enjoyed the greatest success: Gio Ponti’s ‘Jungla’ vase of 1923 went for €12,000 to an American museum, and at €6,500 his vase depicting a female violin player fetched over twice its estimated price. Fornasetti also elicited exciting bidding battles and very high prices. His little ‘dorico’ cupboard went for €11,000 to English dealers, while six ‘Mongolfiere’ plates climbed from a starting price of €1,600 to €3,800 and now embellish a German private collection. The highest bids among the Scandinavians were realized by Eero Saarinen’s ‘Pedestal’ dining table plus six chairs at €6,500 and Arne Jacobsen’s ‘Egg’ chair with a black leather cover for the same price. Comfortable armchairs were in great demand: Poul Kjaerholm’s ‘PK-0’ was knocked down for €3,300, while €2,300 was authorized for ‘PK-22’. Hans J. Wegner’s ‘Papa Bear’ chair with footstool changed hands for €2,800. Italian design also saw the highest rises in price. A French dealer bid Ettore Sottsass’ large ‘Minareto’ totem up to €11,000. Man Ray’s ‘Le Témoin’, a seat in the form of an eye, achieved €5,600 - more than double its estimate. In the lamps category, the top attraction proved to be six CP-1 sconces by Charlotte Perriand, with a German collector prepared to pay €10,000.
