Pre auction report
This year, too, the choice of African Art is quite extensive. Almost 170 lots are going to be called up. They are of great quality and variety. Figures, masks, utensils by different ethnic groups. The main part of the items stem from German collections.
We carefully researched and documented the provenience of each piece and stated the name of the dealer, auction house or collector where it had been purchased and when the purchase had taken place.
The Art of the Congo in this auction needs to be mentioned especially. Starting with two items by the Bembe: a „nkondi“ nail fetish, 51 cm high, € 14,000/18,000 (lot 96) and a „niombo“ Raphia figurine, 62,5 cm high, € 3,500/3,900 (lot 98). Moreover, an old, outstanding ‚kifwebe’ mask of the Songye, 43 cm high, is going to be called up (lot 116, € 5,000-6,000).
Angola is being represented by a very rare female mask of the Songo, 32 cm high, € 1,000-1,100 (lot 145) and a female mask of the Tshokwe, 22 cm high, € 5,000/6,000 (lot 141).
A four-faced helmet mask of the Vuvi comes from Gabon, 55 cm high, € 3,000/ 3,700 (lot 94) and a tomb watcher with copper fittings of the Mahongwe (lot 89), 57,5 cm high will be called up at around 12,000/ 15,000.
Nigeria brought forth a larger and a smaller Nok head, 10.5 resp. 23.5 cm high, estimated at € 500/600 resp. € 2,200/ 3,000 (lots 45, 46), a Mumuye figurine, 70 cm high, € 3,600/3,900 (lot 71) and an interesting Colon-Art figurine of the Hausa, 103 cm high, € 4,200/ 4,600 (lot 44).
Two headdresses, from the Ekoi and the Keaka have to be pointed out especially. The Ekoi head, 28 cm high, for € 15,000/18,000 (lot 65), the Keaka head, 30 cm high, for € 3,800/4,500 (lot 66). A figurine of the Mossi from Burkina Faso, with a very long torso, measuring 121 cm is estimated at € 2,800/3,000 (lot 18).
The featured male and female antelopes of the Bamana from Mali are of well to very well quality. Part of them show brass fittings (lots 11-14).
